Burton Sub Aqua Club
About the Club
The club was established in 1968 and meets every Tuesday at the Meadowside Centre throughout the year. Our club is one of many branches across the world of the BRITISH SUB AQUA CLUB( BSAC). Use of the pool from 9.00pm / 10.00pm, New members welcome. BSAC training; Ocean Diver, Sport Diver, Dive Leader & Advanced Diver.
The club provides diving equipment for trainees to use during pool training and for use in open water training at Stoney Cove.
In it's early days the club met at the swimming baths off the Old Bridge. During 1980 the club finished alterations to the Co-Op shop in Byrkley Street to provide a Club House. In November that year, TV Botanist, David Bellamy officially opened it. Unfortunately, a few years later it had to be demolished to make way for new council offices.
Over the years, the club has helped recover various submerged items, a gold ring from the canal, a large urn from the River Trent adjacent Stapenhill Cemetery, model boats from Branston Water Park, Two dustbins full of golf balls from the 18th hole water trap at Branston Golf Club, a accidentally misplaced boat trailer at Formark Reservoir, helped Burton Mutual Angling Association catch and transport a substantial quantity of large carp. It has also taken part in the annual raft race at Matlock on Boxing Day and street collections in Burton, both in support of the RNLI.
We arrange expeditions around our shores each summer. Diving off our own Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RIBS) and chartered vessels, Diving around the British Coast can be a very rewarding and social event. Members also arrange SCUBA holidays abroad.
Our Club has an active social event calendar, dining out regularly, fun/fund raising events & occasional diving related coach excursions. Recently about 20 members enjoyed a night out Go-Karting, we have even built our own indoor portable Skittle Alley that we use and hire out (see photo's below).
The Club is now starting to encourage snorkelling as an option, We run snorkel only lessons for groups and individuals. This pool based experience is an excellent way of gaining sufficient confidence to enjoy the underwater world of shallow reefs on holiday. A one hour evening SCUBA experience can also be arranged.
